Core Training for Animal Boarding Staff

This 4-hour intensive course provides boarding-facility staff with the essential skills to safely assess, handle, restrain, and manage dogs and cats in a busy commercial environment. It also covers practical pet first aid, ensuring teams can confidently manage incidents, transfers, and day-to-day animal care with a safe, consistent approach.

Assess Canine Behaviour

  • Interpret canine body language and communication. 
  • Recognise fear, stress, aggression and arousal. 
  • Assess behavioural risk prior to handling. 
  • Adjust handling based on behaviour. 

Safe Capture, Handling & Restraint

  • Capture dogs safely in kennel and field settings. 
  • Select and use leads, muzzles and catch poles correctly. 
  • Apply low-stress restraint techniques. 
  • Manage injured or aggressive dogs safely. 

Contain & Transport Management

  • Secure kennels, crates and holding areas. 
  • Monitor dogs in containment for welfare risks. 
  • Safely load, unload and transport dogs. 
  • Record and report containment or transport incidents. 

Workplace Health & Safety (WHS)

  • Conduct operational risk assessments. 
  • Apply infection-control and zoonotic precautions. 
  • Use PPE correctly. 
  • Respond to workplace injuries and bites. 

Animal First Aid (Optional)

  • Assess emergencies and vital-sign checks. 
  • Treat bleeding, trauma, heat stress and shock. 
  • Manage seizures, allergic reactions and choking. 
  • Stabilise animals for veterinary transfer.
